Thanks in part to our state-of-the-art surgical suite, we are able to offer a wide range of pet surgeries. From routine spay and neuter procedures to more complex orthopedic pet surgery, our skilled veterinary surgical team works hard to ensure your pet receives the best possible care. To ensure the safety of all pets in our care, we follow strict safety and pain management guidelines. Your pet’s well being is our top priority at all times.

Spay & Neuter, Orthopedic Surgery, Emergency Surgery and More!

Prior to surgery, your pet will be placed under anesthesia. In order to ensure it is safe to administer anesthesia to your pet, we will first conduct diagnostic blood work. This blood work is important because it will help our veterinary team determine if there are any underlying health conditions that could adversely interfere with the safe administration of anesthesia. In general, our vet care team recommends withholding food at least 12 hours prior to surgery. Since nearly all operations are performed in the morning (aside from emergency surgery), this means feeding your pet a meal the night before, but no food in the morning. It is safer to administer anesthesia to a pet with an empty stomach.

If your pet is suffering from a health emergency and requires an immediate operation, our veterinarian is able to perform emergency surgery. One of the most common emergency surgical procedures is to address gastric dilation volvulus (GDV). GDV surgery is necessary to treat gastric torsion, which occurs most commonly in large breed dogs. GDV surgery is essential to preventing the dangerous build up of pressure inside a dog’s stomach should the stomach become twisted.

Our veterinarians understand that any surgical procedure can be a nerve-racking experience for pet owners and their pets. We work closely with pet owners to help them prepare for the procedure and know exactly what to expect each step of the way. Prior to discharging your pet into your care, our veterinary care team will review post-operative care instructions with you. This includes how to keep pets calm and resting in the days following the operation. For routine procedures, like spay and neuter, you may find that keeping your pet quiet is the most difficult part! We will also cover the administration of pain management medication and what warning signs to watch for should your pet experience post-surgery complications.

Dr. Parkerson and Dr. Ong have more than 40 years of combined experience caring for cats and dogs and other small animals. This level of experience, combined with our compassionate care, ensures your pet receives the best possible care before, during and after surgery. We treat each pet as if he or she were a member of our own family. To learn more about our caring, experienced approach to pet surgery, call our Houston veterinarian at (713) 783-4044.
